Celebrate the fifth annual National Moth Week at Long Key Nature Center during the Friends of Long Key’s Native Moth & Butterfly Plant Sale. Learn about the importance of moths and their impact on Earth’s ecosystems.
The event is set for Saturday, July 30, at Long Key Nature Center, 3501 SW 130th Ave., Davie. Admission for adults is free; $5 for kids who participate in “Magical Moths.”
The Friends of Long Key (FOLK) group is hosting a variety of activities to observe National Moth Week, including hosting the Moth & Butterfly Plant Sale (indoors) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
Other activities, which run from 2 to 10 p.m. for FOLK’s Moth Day Program on Saturday, include:
2 p.m.: Opening remarks by Kelli Whitney, a naturalist at Long Key Nature Center;
2:30 p.m.: “Peculiar Habits of Moths,” with Ingrid Asencio, a naturalist at the center;
3:30 and 5 p.m.: Drawings for door prizes and a raffle;
4 p.m.: “Moth Identification and Ecology”;
7 p.m.: “Moths Commonly Found at Long Key Natural Area”;
8 to 10 p.m.: Activities involving how to use lights, sheets, and potions to attract moths.
“Magical Moths for Kids” is set for Saturday and Sunday, July 30-31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ages 3 to 12 years welcome. $5 per child.
