Beginning at midnight on Wednesday, May 17, and ending 24 hours later, the Glades Historical Society — operators of the Lawrence E. Will Museum of the Glades — is participating in the Great Give 2017.

This 24-hour, online giving event is led by United Way of Palm Beach County, Achieve, Nonprofits First and United Way of Martin County. Great Give 2017 is designed to raise as much money as possible for local nonprofits in just one day.

Billy Bowlegs III, a Seminole tribal elder, lived from 1862-1965.

Last year, Great Give 2017 raised a total of more than $3 million for 504 local nonprofits. This community-wide event celebrates the spirit of giving and the collective effort it takes to strengthen our community, while raising critical funds for hundreds of nonprofits serving every need.

The Lawrence E. Will Museum of the Glades supports historic and scientific research and provides fine-art and science-based programs and exhibitions to the general public. We engage students and volunteers in the process of cataloging and digitizing historic documents, photographs and ethnographic interviews.

The museum, at 530 S. Main St. in Belle Glade, houses a bustling archaeological laboratory used by scholars from several Florida colleges and universities. Archaeologists working with the museum specialize in research aimed at the advancement of our understanding of the Pre-Columbian people of the Glades region.

During the past year, the Lawrence E. Will Museum of the Glades has experienced incredible growth. Over the past two months, we have hosted over 500 visitors from all over Florida. Your generous contribution to our mission will assist in all of our ongoing efforts.

We hope you will consider donating to the Glades Historical Society through;; or by telephone, 1-844-448-3329, on May 17.

Please remember: 24 hours of generosity can empower the future to preserve the past.
